Hypertension, or high blood pressure, affects millions of people in the United States and around the world. What’s even more concerning is that many people don’t even realize they have it until serious symptoms occur, often when it’s too late and the damage is already done.
I recently saw a patient who had no idea he was living with high blood pressure. One day, he developed a sudden and severe headache and ended up in the ER. Tragically, he had suffered a stroke due to undiagnosed hypertension. It was heartbreaking to see – because with simple awareness and early intervention, it could have been prevented.
Just like many chronic conditions, hypertension is preventable and highly manageable. Regular check-ups, a balanced diet low in sodium, exercise, stress management, and taking prescribed medications can make a world of difference.
Let’s spread awareness and encourage everyone to “know their numbers” because knowing is the first step to prevention.
