Running is often one of the first activities that flashes through our minds when we think of a workout. For many, the thought of running is unappealing and discourages them from being physically active. However, a good workout doesn’t have to involve a strict running routine! If you dread the treadmill but still want to stay active, try a few of the suggestions below.
1. Pilates
Pilates, a low-impact exercise, is perfect if you do not enjoy high-intensity workouts. Usually, a session is composed of a series of small movements that focus on muscular strength and endurance. 2. Yoga
Yoga, meaning yoke or union, is an ancient practice that brings together the body and mind. Although it might sound similar to Pilates, Yoga requires a person to hold poses for an extended amount of time in an effort to relax the mind. A typical routine combines breathing exercises, meditation, and a variety of poses that flex various muscle groups. In addition, according to the American Osteopathic Association, Yoga may lessen chronic pain and lower blood pressure. If you are looking to relax while burning a few extra calories, consider incorporating Yoga into your daily routine.
3. Cycling
Indoor cycling classes are a great way to squeeze in a workout to improve cardiovascular health. This is also a great option for those who find motivation in working out with others or those who want to work out no matter what the weather is like outside. However, if you don’t want to wait until gyms have re-opened after COVID-19, outdoor cycling at an easy pace can be a great substitute for the time-being. This total-body workout is perfect for those who love a challenge because it works all the major muscle groups. 4. Hobbies
We realize that due to COVID-19, many workout routines were disrupted due to the closure of gyms and other facilities. Some of the activities stated above might not be options right now which means it’s time to develop new routines! A good way to stay physically active is to jump back into your hobbies. Governor Greg Abbott recently stated that outdoor sports, such as golf or tennis, are permitted as long as you are safely practicing social distancing measures and limiting the number of people in your group activities. If you were on a dance team as a child or played tennis in college, maybe it’s time to dust off those skills.
All in all, the key is to be physically active. Everyone’s body is different which means the way we choose to stay active will be too. Move your body by doing more of what you enjoy!
